Audi's R8 goes all-electric

I'd be interested in getting an electric car, if only they could increase the range between charges.

Nice concept though.

I confess, I really liked the look of the R8 when it came out, quite different to their usual tat. I like the look of the leccy version as well and:

Owning an electric car would to me be as much fun as trying to fry an egg using a toaster (annoying, frustrating and impractical)

Hmm, from a purely practical point of view, considering my fuel budget for work monthly is £360, an electric car would represent a significant saving and with a top speed way above the speed limit, would suit my purposes quite well. YMMV but I have no problem at all with keeping my lovely Horace for fun and having a practical electric car for the part of my driving life which is already no fun at all.

Hmm. I'll pass thank you. Not that the R8 isn't a lovely car, the electric bit is the issue.
On a wider issue, electric cars behave differently to petrol ones - if they do become more popular, I expect to see a rise in accidents.

155 miles on one of those is pretty good. I bet there could be power savings if they reduce the 0-60 and tones down the power output.

I want my next car to be hydrogen powered or fully electric. That’s the ideal situation. If nothing worthy exists when it’s time to change, I’ll get another petrol car.

In the mean time, for short journeys, this appeals:

No matter how much sense an electric makes (although they're not quite there yet) I am a petrol head through and through. Never mind top speed or range or cost, an electric car will never sound like a Hemi V8. I love the engine as much as the car itself. R8 with V10 = WIN, R8 with electric = FAIL. For me anyway.

In theory, you could have a sample of engine noise played when you pressed the throttle. You could make your electric fiesta sound like a Ferrari 355!

The range is the big problem. I do about 300 miles a week, to work and back, but I need to visit other sites now and then, which is a 300-400 mile round trip!

An electric car would suit me fine, I had the noise of an engine. The quieter the better.

If there were refuelling centres for electric cars installed, it would be fine.

For that, you either need a standard battery size, shape and output for all cars - instead of driving up to a tank, you drive over a hole in the forecourt and the old battery is dropped out and a new one pushed back in. Or you would need fuel cell cars.

The biggest problem with the batteries would be getting shagged ones put into the car which only last a couple of miles...

Agreed. This is less than half the range of my car on a full tank. What I was saying was if that Audi were to make the car demand less power, they could possibly get more miles out of it.

At the moment, these electric super cars are doing a good job: stopping you thinking of electric cars as invalid cars. The most popular electric vehicles I see are those chairs with fat people on them trundling around.

Imagine the indignity of having to plug your posh R8 penis extension into the wall, or worse, running out of electricity outside a pub where "those working-class types" drink. I love fast, big engined cars as much as the next petrolhead, but nothing says tosser like an R8. Sure there may be a bit of envy in there, but it's not for the car - I'd rather spend the 80k on a V8 Vantage...or a fleet of old Corvettes and Pontiac Firebirds

There's more to the sound of a V8 or V10 than the sound itself - you'd need one hell of a subwoofer to get anywhere near the low-end rumble you'd get with a proper engine.
