http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014 ... e-cure-ivfSo long as we (and more importantly the patients) are given all the facts for the future, I've no problem with it myself. In that scenario we'd be crazy not to do it IMO. We're going to have to take new techniques on a case by case basis, you can't just say we're not going to allow this or that when a technique could come along that the majority could be comfortable with. A chance to wipe out Alzheimers for a growing, ageing population for instance.

While it could be used to eradicate appalling genetic genetic diseases it will be inevitably abused. So you need to work out whether the abuses are so bad to make banning this technology worthwhile.

Just about anything can be abused, but this would be much more difficult. I don't see what's so unethical about it in some quarters, we've got the morning after pill, abortion and any other number of ways of 'playing God'... this as far as we can tell is beneficial for all society. It's gonna happen anyway this sort of genetic manipulation, and we already treat any variety of ailments and diseases with drugs, so why not improve the process? We're going to have to grasp the nettle on so many advancements in our lifetimes, and that's gonna require experimentation like anything else. With stuff that seemed outlandish even 20 years ago the microchip changed everything; climate and environmental change at every discipline and level, mapping the genome, drugs, cybernetic prosthetics and other 'augmentation' potential and realised... There's no going back now.

Depends what you define as a ailment or illness that needs tweaking. It could turn into eugenism once they run out of "illnesses" to cure:S.

I have more faith, which is unusual, granted Really it's about how things are presented by those in charge and the media I suppose - the somewhat-bogus MMR scare, or even how nobody was too impressed by the 'snoopers' charter' and yet nobody gave a crap when it turned out GCHQ and the NSA hacked pretty much the entire internet. However it comes about, there's always a tipping point in either direction for the general public.

This is what I was alluding to in the thread on genetic predisposition to being gay in the news section. Would people want to minimise their chances of their offspring being gay?

To my mind you could have a total ban on such endeavours before they even got started. Legislation that open-ended would never get through parliament come to think of it. Politically toxic.
