That looks very much like a home-made mortar shell; if you don't get on with this guy, leave it by his car and phone the police

Its 100% real, 1977 dated with lots of markings, 30mm L35A1 on the back

Maybe it's just the photo, but it looks bloody enormous for a 30mm, 1977 or not :?

Also, I wouldn't risk storing it anywhere

I was thinking the same. It looks like a 51mm mortar round.

I'm actually kind of wondering how legal Bratty's arsenal is.

Do we need to add in a police raid as an option?

Bratty, does it ring if tapped or does it just give a dull note?

If you do hit it with a hammer to see if it rings, do put a little cotton wool in each ear, just in case.

According to Jane's Book Of Ammunitions (yes really) an L35A1 is a 120mm canister tank round (i.e. tank version of a shotgun cartridge), mostly used by Challenger Mk1's, which looks a bit more like it. 30mm isn't a mortar shell, it's a bullet.

It would also appear that the L35A1 is also a fuse used in the M29/M29A1 mortar round (and matches the shape at the front of the shell as well).

Glad to see there's no possible confusion in military equipment naming!

Wouldn't that be similar to "trappped down a well/mine"?

I think a case of shot gun shells and another marked "danger" may do the job.
