I'd be very dubious of those statistics (as I am with most), but food for thought. My only picture of crystal meth comes from films and the odd celeb

I think the prevalence of cannabis is enough to stop most people. If you can get high with little risk such as from cannabis why progress to anything stronger. Most cannabis users never go on to anything hard no matter what governments say about it being a gateway drug. The real gateway drug is tobacco but that is legal so the cannot admit that. If they legalise cannabis and tax it like Uruguay then there would be little or no interaction with dealers selling harder drugs.

what on earth are you smoking? As its obvious its not tobacco with a statement like that. Whats the next level of misuse that tobacco users go to... evil pipes, hookahs?

If you don't smoke then you don't smoke cannabis. Every cannabis user I know also smokes. Very few have gone on to harder drugs. I was not saying that pipes or hookahs are involved. Also the vast majority of smokers do not progress on to drugs. Though every addict I know has tobacco in their past, even if heroin kills them. Just because someone smokes does not mean that they will try drugs.

I had plenty of mates who didn't smoke cigs but smoked other things.

It is not the gateway drug for everyone. In my case if I smoked I would have smoked cannabis as lots of my friends did.

That's a different thing though. Being a non-smoker might reduce the chances of you smoking weed but that's not the same as saying being a smoker makes you more likely to. The two statements are not logically equivalent.

Thank god we don't have a crystal meth problem.
I'd like to think it's because we're a smart cool country that like our recreational chemistry slightly safer.

I suspect most people will have smoked tobacco before trying cannabis. It's far easier to start with a legal drug eg alcohol, tobacco, caffeine.

That was why I described it as the real gateway drug. Ecstasy and acid are clearly not linked but if you mix with a certain crowd you are more likely to come across drugs.
