I have a 24" (or 22" can't remember) computer monitor with DVI input and stereo built in speakers (although I have a full 5.1 surround sound set of little speakers which work very well).

The resolution of the monitor is 1680x1050. Will I be able to play at 1080 and let the monitor resize the image or will I be limited to 720?

Is it possible to plug a PS3 into the monitor (and monitor speakers)? Also, if I wanted to set up the surround sound at a later date is this also possible? IIRC the speakers use headphone jack sockets to plug into the base unit which then has red and white plugged cables to go to the orbital speakers (or something).

Thanks for any help!

I sometimes connect my Xbox to a 22" monitor when the other half wants the TV and have to set the resolution in the Xbox Dashboard manually to 1680x1050. If I try to set it higher than the max resolution of the monitor it doesn't work, i.e. there's not auto down-scaling. I dont know if its the same for the PS3 though.

Nope, no 1080 for you. I also don't know of a DVI output for the PS3, but then my 24" monitor has an HDMI input too, so...

I just had another google for screen resolutions.

The only supported resolutions are 1080, 720, 562 (or somethign) and 480.

And you can buy an HDMI - DVI adapter but it will only work if the monitor support HDCP which I don't think mine does :(

Oh well.

I'll have to save up some more :(

Hmm... coul i plug the PS3 into my computers TV card and play it that way at normal TV resolution???!!!

I thought you only needed HDCP if you wanted to play High-Def films (ie. Blu-ray)?

Just been browsing some more.

In fact, here it is in writing from Sony themselves... CLICKY!.

Looks like I'll be able to use the component cable (supplied with the PS3) to play at 720p resolution (also 1080p but my monitor won't support it). But will have to go through on of these... CLICKY! ... to get it to work with my computer monitor.

Maybe a PS3 is back on the purchase list? :D

You are correct Linux, you only NEED and HDMI cable if you intend to play Bluray discs. In fact you can play games at 1080 resolution using just the component cable.

So the DVI end goes in your monitor and the component end goes to your PS3? I see a couple of problems with that. The PS3, at least for me, didn't come with a component cable, it came with a composite one (Left & Right audio and a single display out) and secondly, that cable has male component plugs - the HDMI to component cable you'll need for the PS3 will also have male plugs, so male-to-female banana plug adaptors will be needed too.

Ah, kk.

Still, it's better than having to buy a new TV/monitor.

This is true. It's a small price to pay for the wonders of MGS4!
