It'll be interesting to see how many people care... until they get away from the futuristic bollocks, they're never gonna be able to pull that series back. It was getting dull years ago, never mind continually making it worse with enormous multi-layer loadout screens for the guns alone.

The options are staring them right in the face, there's any number of recent conflicts they could use to reboot the entire series. By all means have MP modes where people can fly around like Superman if they choose, but you need to take the single player game as your starting point and get people interested all over again.

Setting games in recent (or indeed still ongoing) conflicts tends to get a lot of adverse publicity. Which is why CoD since Modern Warfare has always taken place either been about terrorism, in the future or in Genericistan. EA did set that Warfighter game in a current conflict though but those games get a lot less publicity than CoD.

One problem with War In Space is nobody actually knows how it will go, since it hasn't really happened yet - even if it has in secret it's on a very small scale. So there's no real argument to be had about realism - you might as well have rayguns and jetpacks anyway.

Not that your average CoD player cares where it's set I suspect. It could look like Super Hot and as long as you had K/D ratios and kill streaks, most people would be happy.

Adverse publicity is exactly what the series needs in a fcuked-up way. They can shout about futuristic scenarios all they like, it's been old hat for years. It's the Dredd problem - what used to be dystopian and vaguely sci-fi is fast becoming reality at one hell of a pace. The CoD team know this since every recent game has adapted recent tech advancements and PMCs etc for their story mode, but it's all totally lost in stories you couldn't pay people to care about. Absolutely nothing stands out any more, not even the people in your team!

They could use the first Iraq war and bounce between international teams, showing the fcuk-ups, AWACs, airstrikes, mobile launchers... There's any number of Bravo Two Zero-type stories there that would make for a concentrated storyline they could work with. Either way, the future has been taken as far as possible IMO. And considering they've touched upon the Bay of Pigs fiasco etc, with the passage of time I wouldn't rule out anything down the line.
