Here's the situation:

I have a softmodded Xbox (original) which I want to take to university in a couple of months. The trouble is the TV it is using is too big to realistically take with me. I do however have a spare LCD monitor which is a lot easier to take.

It doesn't seem to be as simple as buying a component cable for the Xbox and using it with a component to VGA adapter cable as it seems they are for PC --> TV only. To get a high res (i.e. 480p or above) it seems you need a much more expensive box thing lke this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Component-to-VGA-LCD-Converter-Adapter-for-PS2-Wii-Xbox_W0QQitemZ120457496915QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item1c0bd38953&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I would then have to use it with a separate Xbox component cable, like this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Component-Cable-Lead-Optical/dp/B000OF22LG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1250159015&sr=1-2

Does anyone have much experience with VGA boxes or using adapters for this kind of thing? I'm a bit of an A/V n00b when it comes to anything more than composite or scart cables. Basically I'm looking for the cheapest way of doing this.

TIA.

I've got a couple of them.
I could sell you one for cheap if you want.

cheapest way is to probably get a TV card for your pc that takes in the composite then run it through that, could sell you a basic one that will do the job cheap if needed

I did that for my Wii for a while until I got a monitor with Component connections

If you're OK with soldering and flashing a BIOS, you could have a go at this one:

VGA Cable mod

Thanks, I'd weighed up all the options, and read through various sets of instructions at Xboxscene and Xbox-Linux etc, but decided I just couldn't be bothered  and the amount of £££ and effort required to get the necessary components wasn't justified. I'm not really bothered too much about HD resolutions as the Xbox hardware won't play 720p content smoothly via XBMC anyway. Otherwise my XBMC experience has so far been excellent!
