Sony promises 'incredible PS3 lineup over next 2-3 years'

I seriously doubt that

It's not unprecedented actually, for Sony. Most of the games that are generally regarded as being at least the most technically accomplished on the PS2 came out when the PS3 was on the horizon. There's no exact parallel for XBox because MS pretty much stopped selling the Xbox once the 360 comes out but Sony tend to keep platforms alive long after their successor has hit the shops. I'm sure you could still buy a PS2 up until a couple of years ago and they still sell them in less developed parts of the world.

'Course, it's at least partly because Sony always made their hardware so ludicrously weird to write for that coders have only just mastered them by the time the next one comes along...

You'll get a bunch of sequels/ports and the odd curio, but I can't imagine it'll be 'incredible' :)

The PS2 has some stellar games, but it never achieved the inventiveness or even cache of PS1 games IMO.

I think this is largely down to the developers striving ever more for realism, and as consoles get better graphic systems, such realism becomes tantalising close.

Limit the graphics capabilities of the machines, and, yes, inventiveness has to take over.

Not sure he was ever actually used in adverts in the EU tbh. Big online at they used him at E3 a couple of times but I think he was much more a US thing in general.
