What I find odd is that it's only one or two that are problematic, all the rest are clear as a bell. Tolfinir and Karliah are the worst offenders by a long shot.

For some reason, I couldn't load from a saved game so I just started anew. Again.
Easier with mouse and headphones.
Currently up on the bleak mountains. I find being a warrior makes it easier to bash through but I'd imagine the other modes are far more effective.

Gah! I'm struggling to get up the mountain to see the wizards. I've found a few caves on the way but can't seem to find a path that leads up a mountain.
Got fed up when I fell off a fallen tree that I was using as a bridge and some dozy git was on it. Sometimes riding horseback is a knightmare!

Ok, I spent hours doing what you're doing. Go to riverwood. There's a path from there to a town at the southern foot of the mountain. From that town there is a path all the way up the mountain.

Still not found a route in. I found a camp of bandits, killed and looted them but then my horse fell and died! Gave up for now.

I found a treasure chest of a house with loads of valuables.
Strangely, the guy attacks me but I still have to "steal" everything!

Yup. I've also come across a locked chest that requires "master" lockpick. It's chewed through 30 of my lockpicks!  It's located within a simple ruin not far from that house. _________________He fights for the users.

Gah! I've got fed up of some of the more imbecilic quests and decided to go looking for the shouts. Got six in total though not all the words for each. Apparently there's twenty in total!  _________________He fights for the users.
