Average house prices fell for the third month in a row during May, according to the Acadametrics index, the only measure which uses actual prices for every property transacted in England and Wales rather than valuation estimates or asking prices.

The scrapping of home information packs (Hips) and fears over a steep rise in capital gains tax (CGT) on second homes and buy-to-let properties propelled more homes on to the market, driving down prices for the third successive month.

Strange, houses are selling like hot cakes in my area at the moment with owners almost dictating the price.

It's the exact opposite here, but then maybe that's cos they were overvalued by tens of thousands to begin with in many cases...

Sounds about right, house prices take a dive just after I am about to buy. Of course, interest rates have got to go up too. Methinks a five year fixed mortgage is on the cards.

I'm frigging pissed off about hips being dumped so quick too. I had to fork out for one in march, and now the onus is back on the buyer, so I have to cough up again!

Good.

The country is in this mess in no small part because of the ever-increasing stupidity, greed and selfishness of the grasping middle classes. When vast swathes of the population cannot afford to even rent a decent-sized house something is clearly rotten in the state of Denmark. So I shall watch with glee as those who profited from the misery of thousands get shagged.

With any luck I will be able to get enough cash together for a deposit on a flat in five years or so!

I'd love it if this "double dip" coincided nicely! :D

Whilst we're on the subject, I would like prices to skyrocket in the UK for the next three years followed by a corresponding plummet in Oz.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
