A group of open source software developers working at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have implemented a native Linux port of Sun's ZFS filesystem. Although the code is functional and available for download (but not production-ready yet), it cannot be merged upstream or shipped in binary form with the Linux kernel due to a licensing conflict. Sun distributes the OpenSolaris source code under its own Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL), which is incompatible with GNU's General Public License (GPL).

Why not change the license to the Linux kernel? Oh wait, the GPL removes the freedom to do such a thing!

For many months Apple were alleged to be working on ZFS support, if not full implementation, for Snow leopard. Only to withdraw late in the day over these licensing issues.

From what I made of it, it wasn't that Apple couldn't make it work due to the licences, it was because Apple wanted the license tweeked (possibly something to do with the Oracle take over), but Sun/Oracle refused...

The CDDL licensing isn't a problem for Apple, if it was OS X wouldn't have DTrace (in the form of instruments).

The Linux people are very much up themselves with the GPL. :(

I like Linux, but a lot of things which are useful or needed aren't available under GPL, so it doesn't get included in the Kernel or some distributions.

The licence, for me, is pretty irrelevant. I just want the bloody thing to work!
