Stick walking is very popular in Finland so I'm surprised they've not gone for that market first with some sort of pedometer/charger concoction. :D

I do remember reading of a military solution which charged batteries during walking / marching. I think it relied on electrostatic materials bending in a suit.

I think that those used piezoelectric methods which generated electricity when squeezed.
