It's about time someone exposed hybrids for what they are - a way for people to feel good about the environment without actually doing anything.

I was surprised Londoners ever tolerated the charge to begin with* - it's so blatantly a revenue-raiser under the usual greenwash BS

*Oke will be along in a minute to complain about apathy, and I think he's right ;)

To be honest whenever I was in London the traffic was still just as bad and the public transport no better. That said I do not bother with the tube anymore as it is too expensive for tourists for the odd days journey. I used the all day bus ticket instead.

I'm glad the big Lexus' dont get away with it anymore. A big V6/V8 with a battery strapped on the side does not make an environmentally friendly car.

Hybrids loose?

Round them up then. Nothing worse than hybrids running around loose, they hunt in packs, you know. ;)

All hybrids do is use an internal combustion engine to lug around a stinking big battery.

A big stinking battery that contributes to acid rain fall.

Many of the big hybrids were no better than the average same sized vehicle. Many of the new vehicles with economy features are considerably better than most vehicles. It is good to see that has been recognised.

It still may be offset in the long run by the fannying about to get the chemicals and parts together though :|

IIRC Clarkson (who was never gonna be a supporter of course) had a go at the Prius for the above reason...

The argument is valid if everyone did it. But that is not what happens. Many will wait a year or two and buy it second hand from the first buyer, possibly replacing an older more inefficient vehicle. That may carry on for many people till the last owners' crock is scrapped. It gradually increases the efficiency of the vehicle fleet overall.

That's a big ask though, and the time frame is especially thrown into sharp relief when you consider the 'green' cars that are being manufactured as the current set are rolling out of the factories. And I've no doubt that the average buyer for such cars isn't average in the grand scheme of things  ;)
