When Web Scouts, Inc. wrote its tank warfare game iCombat for the iPhone, the company put a few extra lines of code into the application. The code checked the size of the application's .plist and, if the files size differed from what it was when the company packaged the application, it would phone home.

Help im being attacked by iPirate!!!

In the end, the makers of iCombat decided that the effort to thwart pirates wasn't worth the trouble, as none of the users they directed to a page asking them to buy the application actually purchased. After all, even big-name software companies know that not every illegal copy equals a lost sale.

Now if only the big content guys would actually admit this we could get a more sensible action on priacy, instead of suingand/or alienating your customers so that they feel obliged to pirate just to play the effing game properly!!!
I personally have had to download hacks to get games, I have the orginal discs for, to work because of "copy protection". The copy protection must of been the "if they cant use the disc they cant copy it" type.

Apple have dropped license keys from much of their software. iWork, iLife and OS X don't need a license key and it's a breath of fresh air.

I bet their Pro apps are still secured with a license key.

I wouldn't know, but I suspect so.

Although, if their experiment with the consumer products is a success they may decide to do away with license keys for their whole product range??
