A really interesting article. I think he is right, we've got to rethink the way we use the CPU's. I think that a half-way solution might be to treat the all cores as a resource within a pool, the program doesn't know what is available to it, but will use as much as it can from the pool of CPU cores, the OS manages this. The holy grail would be for compilers (or even the OS/VM) to know when a line of code can be executed on another core and just do it, this would remove any need for a programmer to think about how to split their application over multiple cores. |

If designed by scratch. What are the chances of that happening with legacy and compatibility being crucial marketing tools? |

OS X was designed "from scratch" with regards to the old Mac platform. Sure, every OS uses similar ideals, but it was still a huge leap, and they managed to bridge the gap. It would mean that Microsoft/Apple/etc. would just need to bridge the gap and crucially, take the bridge away when everyone is across! |

OSX is Unix based and Probert's suggestion was that anything new would be very different from Windows or Unix. |

Yes, I know it is, I was saying it was designed "from scratch" with regards to the old Mac platform, i.e. it was almost completely different...But the original Mac platform wasn't, yet when Apple made the jump from one software architecture to another, people's applications still mostly worked, or worked with only a little tweeking. If a new OS deigned was created, the implementor would only need to create a method of bridging the gap for a short while. |
