A trainer at the SeaWorld park in Orlando, Florida, has died after being attacked by a killer whale.

Witnesses said the whale had jumped and grabbed Dawn Brancheau by the waist from a poolside platform before dragging her underwater

Not saying she deserved it but this kind of thing is bound to happen sooner or later isnt it?

It's a dolphin not a whale, makes me laugh a little inside when people still call it a whale instead of an Orca or killer whale

And it's a serial killer, take it to Texas and give it the death penalty!

At last, living proof that someone that I know (sort of) outside my family knows this fact. :D

LOL, I was thinking this today. I know it's an Orca but I had a sneaking suspicion that it was related to dolphins. I knew it wasn't a whale anyway :D

Next up you'll be trying to tell me that a koala bear isn't a bear and a flying fox isn't a fox.

They're all cetaceans though, so...

For 5 internets, can anyone explain the difference between a whale and a dolphin then?

It isn't size as I've dived with whales that are smaller than orcas. Still pretty big mind you.

Dolphins go much better with chips.

Whales have baleen whereas dolphins have teeth. Killer whales for instance therefore are technically dolphins.

Cetacea (aquatic mammals dolphins/whales) : divided into two suborders, Mysticeti (baleen whales) and Odontoceti (toothed whales, which includes dolphins and porpoises)

(baleen whales being filter feeders) Which technically makes the killer whale closer related to dolphins than a traditional whale

Correct. So, calling it a killer whale is not entirely incorrect, despite being more closely related to the dolphin.

Do whales have hair?

Yeah, but it sounds a lot more scary than "killer dolphin".

No Killer Dolphin sounds worse. Its taken what you think of a cutesy human loving fish (shut up, I'm being ignorant) and turning into something nasty.

Killer Dolphin ftw!

By the way is Mysticeti are baleen whales and Odontoceti toothed whales arent they all technically whales anyway by that description?

That makes dolphins and porpoises whales.
