http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8052798.stm My understanding is that this is trying to do something different in terms of search not the same as google. CSS is a disaster area and it fails accessibility all over the place. |

Quite impressed with it, though I don't think Google will be quaking in their boots just yet. They should have come up with a better name - something short and snappy to type in. And the results are far too mathematical for me to understand. For example, a search for "speed of light" produced...
To be honest, the first two would have been sufficient! But it's impressive all the same. |

I typed in “cake recipes” and it told me it didn’t understand what I was on about. Google on the other hand threw up loads of results. I thought this was a search engine, or am I missing the point? |

it's for maths type stuff... if you had to convert metric to imperial for the recipe... that it could cope with... ask for the recipe and it's stuck... |

So it’s not really a “search engine” in the way that I know them, which is what it’s being touted about as. |

Meh. It's very impressive in terms of what they've done to get it working, but it's still not great - through no fault of their own. If I type in de Broglie wavelength - it understands me and give me a rather simplified overview, but if I try and perform a calculation, as they seem to want people to be able to do, by typing in:
it doesn't do anything... theChipmunk :EDIT: Okay, I take that back - I don't know why it didn't do it the first time round, but it worked the second time... |

It is being touted BY THE TABLIOIDS as an alternative to Google or whatever. Wolfram Alpha have never agreed with this, they have always stated that it is for maths and science type stuff and it will use the web to establish facts and put them onto a page. You need to have a reason to use it in order to get a decent result out of it. i.e. if you are doing your chemistry homework and need to know what propanol looks like then... CLICKY or you are doing your maths coursework based around 3D solids and need to know the properties of an icosidodecahedron then... CLICKY If, however you are bored and want to find something to pass the time or you are looking for advice on which lipstick to wear then you need to be using Google. |
