Quote:
Shadow chancellor George Osborne said a Tory government would deliver speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to the "majority" of homes by 2017.

That presents all kinds of questions of course, not least of which is 'O rly?', but would we even need that sort of capacity realistically - maybe multiple HD streams and mass cloud computing, say? :?

Quote:
He said cabling in rural areas could be paid for by private investors or part of the licence fee.

Another bunch of outstanding PFI schemes that wind up costing the taxpayer millions (if not billions) no doubt, and probably with deplorable service too

Quote:
Mr Osborne told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "In the 19th Century we built the railways, in the 20th Century we built the motorways, in the 21st Century let's build the super-fast broadband network that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs for Britain."

I have no problem with that notion and spirit at all, but you'd better do it fcuking right, son

Quote:
The Tories said money from private investors would pay for better cabling.

But the Conservative Party said it might not be attractive for private companies to install broadband cabling in some rural areas, in which case a proportion of the BBC licence fee could be used.

It said the BBC could continue to set aside 3.5% of its licence fee - which currently goes to the digital switchover - to fund broadband expansion.

I seriously doubt 3.5% of the licence fee will cover what's needed, and I also suspect this is just another Con attempt to hobble the BBC for their Murdoch master :(

Their proposals will never work.

More vacuous promises intended to please Sun readers. It'll never happen, or if it does it'll be limited to the South East...

Since the article's been updated...

Quote:
For Labour, Treasury Minister Stephen Timms said: "On broadband it's not Britain but the Tories that are playing catch-up.

"Labour have already announced measures for rolling out broadband across the country - and the Tories have opposed the plans to make that happen. "

Yeah, I've got more faith in the Tory proposals as it happens :o

Can they give us this? Really? hmmm not without BT investing in a better network. But I guess they'd rather give the money to satisfy the shareholders.

The thing is, if people are provided with something, they will generally find a use for it. Also, if BBC iPlayer HD didn't exist, it would be a heck of a lot harder to convince many home customers they need to upgrade their connection speed.

We know. They're being proposed by a UK government entity.

I agree, but I was thinking ahead to the inevitable 'Well, actually, 'x' amount of people only need this' arguments, and just how much you can do with 100Mb :?

Oh it will, at some point. It's just that when the UK has 100 Mbps the rest of the world will have at least 1 Gbps and South Korea will probably be on 100 Gbps.

That is expect for Australia, which will have the same speed as the UK but cost twice as much. Bloody colonists.

Exactly. That plus 3.5% of the licence fee is only around £100M anyway, and BT cannot be encouraged to do it now. £100 Million will make no difference to them. What is better is upgrade the USO for BT to 100 Mbits by 2017, with annual targets. If any of these are not met then BT would be banned from dividends or bonuses until targets where met.
