I dread to think how much it'll cost to get my son on the road when he's old enough.

My plan is to get him enough lessons so he can pass his test before he goes to uni (assuming he goes). That way he'll be three years older before he needs a car.

£3500 is a lot of money. I gotta be honest, I wouldn't have a car at 17 now. I waiting til I was 19 as it was and that was 9yrs ago. Saying that though, I wouldn't have a car now if I didn't need one.

That's what I did. Also, don't go with big companies like BSM, from what friends tell me, they insist that you take at least as many hours as the DVLA recommend (45 hours professional lessons and 22 hours private). I didn't get any private lessons because it was too much to go on Dad's insurance, and I passed my test first time with 29 hours of professional lessons.

I haven't driven in almost three and a half years! But then again, I haven't needed to because Aber is so small you can walk everywhere.
This coming year I may be put onto the Purple One's insurance as we are looking at getting a house outside of Aber and commuting in. It looks like I'll add about £150 to her insurance which isn't bad...

Not being funny but why would a full-time student need to drive anywhere? That's what buses are for.

I live 30 miles from uni

It's cheaper for me to commute in each day (or car share with my parents) than to live in the city in terms of rent, bills etc.

It's also quicker for me to drive in than it is to use public transport. For a 9am lecture I would need to leave my house about 7am in order to get in on time using the train, with the bus that would be closer to 6am, I can leave at 8 if I drive and still get in on time, it's also cheaper when I have early lectures for £5 in fuel as opposed to the £10-20 for the ticket. I do try to avoid driving when I can though, usually spending time at my girlfriends so I'm not driving every day.

My insurance hasn't been bad, I held my licence for 4 years before I got my own car, only being named driver on another policy with no NCB and I was looking at £800 TPFT, after driving a year that dropped to £500 FC (TPFT was still £650+). Since selling the Megane and getting a larger, more powerful car it has gone up, but it's only £180 extra (if that) over the 6 months until I am going to have another year NCB to add on which should drop my premium further

I think I had about 20-25 before I passed with no private lessons, I got mine from the local AA guy, but it was more of a franchised thing and he was the same guy my sister used and she passed first time as well as myself.

my driving test, many years ago, consisted of

moving from the car park, left turn out of the car park at the top of the road another left turn then a few hundred yards to the lights

while sitting at the lights someone jumped a red resulting in a major accident

i then was asked by the examiner to execute a three point turn then a right and another right back into the car park

they passed me

that was my driving test …

many years bback on my test. Approaching a busy traffic light controlled cross roads there was a side road coming in to my right a police car came out of it putting its blues and two's on as it did. I had to do an emergency stop to avoid hitting it. :?

Driving test examiner hit his head on the wind screen 8-)

Didn't he have his seatbelt on?

My wife had something similar on her test. A small child ran out on the road right in front of her. She just managed to stop in time. She passed too.

Same thing for me but I saw the boy on the pavement well in advance and anticipated it so came to a gentle stop, and then the boy ran out into the road between parked cars.
