Facebook has announced a new service for the friends and family of dead people.

Monday morning, after some public pressure from Canada's privacy czar, Mark Zuckerberg and company told the world they're now "memorializing" the Facebook profiles of those who graduate to that big social network in the sky.

It's a nice idea, but I can see this not being much help in some cases. Part of mourning is moving on, and I don't like the idea of an online memorial that can be accessed all the time.

As opposed to a grave stone that can be accessed at any time?

Well, not from your mobile, at home, on the bus... A physical memorial requires deliberate effort to travel. It's an event, maybe a small one, of varying frequency.
I'm just thinking of a family friend who lost her husband - she found it very hard to let go and move on, and something like a memorial Facebook page wouldn't have helped her, IMHO.
Horses for courses, we grieve in different ways.
