Bratty, only one third of the public wash their hands after using the toilet.
That's why when I was working in a bar, all the staff would wash our hands in the bar washroom after going to the toilet. Even if you wash your hands in the bathrooms, you're still going to have to use the door handles that the other 66% who didn't wash their hands have touched.

That's why I've always thought it was strange that you had to pull the door to get out of toilets - it would be much more hygienic if you could push the door open on the way out with your feet.

I’ve taken to using my sleeve in this situation.

My concern being that eventually, I’ll turn into some kind of hermit who only goes out if I have a box of latex surgical gloves to hand.

Think that through. Would it be more hygienic with blood and broken teeth splattered on the other side?

Compared with what it could be splattered with, I think the answer is yes. At least you would be able to see the splattering. The residue from a good “back door sweeping” may not be as obvious. :D
