With rumors abound that Apple is bringing out a tablet device at the start of next year, people seem to have forgotten about opposition. Gizmodo certainly haven't forgotten, and they've just released the first details of a new take on the tablet device… from Microsoft. You heard that correctly; Microsoft is going to be bringing out a tablet-like device soon, which is named the 'Courier'.

Gizmodo states that the Courier device isn't actually a tablet, but more of a booklet; it boasts two (approximately) 7-inch screens, held together with a hinge, giving it that book-like appearance. The hinge in the middle will hold a home button, similar to the iPhone, and the outer rim of one of the screens will display statuses, such as battery life and wireless signal. To add to this, the back of the Courier will hold a camera.

Interesting

Yeah. I must say that there are times when a stylus is a pretty good thing to have. The iPhone interface is very good, but limiting when it comes to fine grained control. You can’t jot notes down on it without using the keyboard, which I find awkward at times, especially if I want to be spontaneous.

I have to say it: Newton.

Actually, don't MS have a history of seeing what competitors are about to bring out then showing a 'concept' or 'preview' of their version of the same technology with all sorts of promises about how it will be better than what 'the other side' have, which in the end either don't appear or only appear years after the competing devices come to market and in fact aren't as good?

For example - by current timing, this device will come out, what, three years after a Microsoft Surface computer his the shelves? When are they due exactly?

They've had tablets out on the market for about a decade, this is just the next iteration...

Pink is the Zune phone IIRC

I'd be happy being able to scribble notes that aren't converted to text, my handwriting is legible to me so it does me :)

Ah yes, you're right actually. Haven't they been generally not very good? I seem to recall at least one version of tablet windows needed to be rebooted about once an hour due to horrendous memory leaks in the code..

The Tablet stuff on XP/Vista/7 was fine for me using a Tecra M4 (or M400...I forget which)

The problem was a lot of the software that used it wasn't that well written and slow, but it looks good, wouldn't want to test it though

When I was at Augsburg Uni, the staff in Wirtschaftwissenschaft (economic science in relation to IT) got FJS Lifebook tablets, they used them a lot for note taking in meetings, many of which last several hours, and I never saw any of them reboot during a working day...

I used one extensively about 7 or 8 years ago, and I really liked it.
