It looks like Apple is finally going to start bowing to pressure and allow third party applications to use the NFC reader on the iPhone.

Sajid Javid is taking the credit for it, of course, saying that after extensive talks at high levels with Apple, they have agreed to give the Brexit app (for EU nationals trying to get work and resident permits in the UK) to also use an iPhone for the process - they can currently use Android, but, because part of the process requires them to scan their NFC equipped national ID card into the app, the process doesn't currently work on iPhone.

On the other hand, Germany is equal opportunity in this regard, it doesn't matter what smartphone you use, everything is paper based. Lots of paper, the white, A4 stuff and the colourful stuff in your wallet.

I think that Apple are also realising that as more things use NFC (for example the planned National Smartcard system for travel being pushed by the government which is being put onto phones) if they don't open it up they will lose users
