The Army and Navy flyover has had a troubled past few months thanks to frequent closures for repairs and rumbling debates on its future and safety.

Most recently it was closed for an ‘indefinite period’ on September 11 but now Essex County Council have announced the flyover, which crosses over the Army and Navy roundabout, will reopen for use on Monday, October 22 at 6am.

Basically, it’s a rickety old structure that was built 40 years ago. It’s been closed twice this year, the second period of closure was caused by a couple of the pillars shifting off their bases. Apparently all fixed now.

The junction at the Army and Navy roundabout (called because once there was the Army and Navy pub there where bands like The Prodigy played) is very, very busy. The flyover tended to relieve the pressure. That whole junction needs re-thinking - either with a better bridge, some kind of through route like the Shot Over in Oxford, and better traffic management. The closed bridge has caused tailbacks for long distances in both directions along the A1060 and A130.
