New rules barring public bodies from putting Shetland in a box on official documents have come into force.

Islands MSP Tavish Scott had sought to change the law to ban the "geographical mistake" which "irks" locals, by amending the Islands (Scotland) Bill.

So, the box meant people didn't regularly see how remote the Shetland Islands are so the solution is going to require maps that lack any meaningful definition so that Shetland can be included.
I can't help but thinking this is a victory for politics at the expense of common sense.

So it affects only Scotland. A lot of hoohaa for nothing.

If it were down to me, I'd just leave Shetland off Govt maps and see how they feel then.

1) Surely that is only enforcable for maps printed in Scotland.
2) Map makers that are, will probably just miss the Shetlands off all together so they don't have to waste a load of paper.

A small, separate, A6 addendum included with every map.

It would have been primary education when I learnt what the islands/regions in boxes meant, and didn't mean. What is the world coming to.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
