Have you been ditching your physical media library for a digital one from a major VOD library and feel reasonably safe in the knowledge those films will always be available? Think again.

Twitter user Anders G. da Silva (drandersgs) has found himself in a few stories today after he tweeted that he lost three digital movies bought on the iTunes Store in Canada. da Silva wrote to Apple to complain about the missing movies, Apple wrote back saying: “the content provider has removed these movies from the Canadian Store. Hence, these movies are not available in the Canada iTunes Store at this time.”

We’ve been here before - Amazon removed a copy of Orwell’s 1984 from the Kindle a few years ago, to much dismay (and irony). This seems to be a problem with streaming and “owing” digital content (adverts seem to like using the word “own” when it comes to films). I think the expectation is that owning digital content is the same as owning a DVD. Clearly not.

Apple's reply was interesting. You are paying for the right to download a copy of the film at the time of purchase, there is no other guarantee of availability and you should keep a backup copy of the film.

How many films can you cram onto an AppleTV again? Or what happens when you get a new iPhone? No wonder the new iPhones have so much memory on them.

It wouldn't be such a problem for people like me, who have a decent NAS system in the cellar, but, really, how many average people have multiple terrabytes of backed up storage in their house?

Yeah, but aren’t the movies loaded with DRM? Apple TVs don]t store data - they buffer for streaming but that’s about it. If you download your moves, you really need to pull it into your iTunes library, BUT if you have an SSD based machine, then you may well find space there running out, unless you buy an external HD. I guess people are assuming their iTunes purchases are safe online. Evidently not.

The whole push seems to be towards streaming now, and away from physical media.

That's pretty pants and I recall the Amazon issue too. If you're paying a price comparable to purchasing physical media, that item should IMO be yours for life. Clearly not the same thing and I think the price should reflect that.

An American blogger had a go at me about this yesterday, saying that even with physical media, like a DVD, you can scratch it and it is unplayable.

I pointed out that, yes, he was correct, scratched media is a problem, but that is my problem, the retailer doesn't burst into my house and scratch the DVD for me!

Completely agree. And whilst a DVD can be scratched, I've yet to scratch any of my DVDs. The CDs I've scratched were the ones I used to leave lying around and not place into their cases. AFAIK all of my DVDs are in perfect condition.

This isn't akin to someone scratching it but stealing it. Essentially you've bought a DVD and the shop has broken into your house and removed it without your permission.

This is exactly why I still buy DVD's and rip them to digital.
I don't have a moral issue doing that as I'm still paying the studeos their money to own the film.

But you're not paying to own the file.
You're buying a license to watch the film on the selected media. Ripping it breaches that agreement.

Don't care.
I might not legally be in the right, but morally I am. I've paid to own/watch the film, and that's what I'm doing.
No other industry that I can think of tries to take back a product you've purchased.
