I remember this comedian from when I was a child. Hadn't heard much from him in recent years, probably retired.

I didn't think he had retired despite being 90 :o
Mind you, he was known for marathon performances (lasting for several hours) so I guess he may have been flagging a bit.

When they were talking it about this on the BBC news this morning one of his throw away lines made me LOL:
"Oh, what a great day, what a great day it is to stick a cucumber through a letterbox and yell "Help! The martians have landed""

He was one of the greats. One of his performances was broadcast a few months ago during BBC 4’s run of The Good Old Days. I think I liked him more as a kid than I did as I got older.

They were saying on the news that his sets were hours long. Sometime up to five hours long. Sure, he had breaks and guests, but that’s a serious amount of value for money considering most will give you an hour or so WITH support acts on top. He kept a log of what made people laugh in different parts of the country so he could tailor his act to suit.

He was in a Doctor Who story too.
