A man, believed to be sleeping rough, has been found dead in the doorway of an empty catalogue store following a cold and frosty night.

Police were called to the store in Springfield Road, Chelmsford, by the ambulance service at about 11.10 GMT.

For those who don‘t know, this is in the town centre, by the river. It’s a fairly built up area, but not well sheltered. Springfield road can channel wind into the town from the outskirts. Argos left the site last summer, and homeless people have been able to open the shutters and get inside to sleep. I guess they offered reasonable shelter in milder weather, but clearly not enough in the recent cold weather.

And for those who are interested, this is the same location of the failed EDL march in September, where only two people turned up.

Was at the EDL counter demo.

This is depressing. We’re really failing the most vulnerable in society.

The sad thing is that I read that there were beds available at the local shelter.
Totally preventable.

Yes, I read that too. Thing is either he was not wanting to go there, didn’t know about them, or he was banned for some reason.

There have been a few rough sleepers here in Chelmsford, but more recently there have been a lot more. I’ve seen some not only in shops, but subways and underpasses where they were not before. There are also the “aggressive beggars” in town as well of late (this seems to be a growing problems in Essex - Brentwood, Colchester, Clacton all seem to have a lot more than we do). In fact, there was a poster campaign here saying not to give them money, but to give the money to one of the local shelters instead.
