Burn EV burn: Putting out a Tesla Model S fire is VERY hard

I'm sort of surprised that they can use water to put out the fire. Water and lithium aren't normally a particularly good combination in terms of low flammability.

As long as the battery casings aren't cracked, I should think that the cooling effect of the water is needed and reduces the risk of an explosion. If the casings are cracked on the other hand...
