A planned demonstration by the English Defence League (EDL) was called off at the last minute - after only two protesters turned up.

Essex Police said the force had "acted on intelligence" and had put on extra patrols in Chelmsford on Saturday.

I was one of the counter demonstrators! I'd say there were easily between 20 and 30 of us. :D
Myself and a couple of others from Peterborough Trades Union Council went down to show solidarity with Chelmsford TUC opposing the EDL.
The EDL are planing to come to Peterborough in October so we're hoping some folk from Chelmsford will reciprocate in telling them to sod off out of the city as they definitely aren't welcome.

Probably had a bit of time on your hands that day then? Hopefully you found something worthwhile to do in Chelmsford before returning home.

Meeting new people, having a chat. Marvelling at the frankly underwhelming effort made by Essex constabulary (although in hind sight actually a good call but they would have been stuffed if there had been an actual demo and it kicked off). Alternatively, Cambs police just go nuts when this sort of thing happens - last time the EDL came to Peterborough (and there was an actual march) we had barriered off routes, mounted police and a helicopter.

We didn't really hang around long after it was called off - came back to sunny Peterborough for cheaper beer :D

Essex police probably knew attendance would be low. Also, you weren’t too far from Essex Police HQ, and the Chelmsford Police Station, so the whole thing was probably covered.

Also, never underestimate the power of a 90 year old Essex grandmother to put idiots in their place. :-D
