That was the main argument for the continued development of more efficient petrol engines - we need the oil for other things anyway and a by-product of producing them is petrol, so why not use it?

Yes, why not continue burning the fossil fuels we absolutely don't have to burn just because it's convenient, worsening climate change even more and making things like hurricane Harvey a yearly occurrence?

The whole point is to stop burning fossil fuels. Until/unless someone can make an emission free petrol engine, burning petrol is always worse than not burning petrol. The idea burning petrol slightly more efficiently will somehow be OK is frankly fatuous. Yes, you might slow the rate of change by say 5%. So instead of being utterly ****ed in 50 years we'll be utterly ****ed in 55 years. Yay! Well done us!

Ruddy hell.

Then what do you do with the millions of gallons of waste petrol that are produced as a byproduct of the things we need?

Well, let's start by not sticking it in combustion engines and basically poisoning the planet even more shall we? Let's at least agree on that.

Firstly, the idea distinct products come out of crude oil processing is incorrect. It's not like crude oil consists of a mix of several distinct things in lumps. We get most of the petrol out of crude oil because we process crude oil specifically to get petrol. if you don't ask for it, You don't get it, or at least you get a lot less of it.

Secondly, if we don't get petrol we can get more of the things we do still need out of the crude oil to make whatever product we do still need. By making petrol we end up with less of those other things. We do that because we know we can sell petrol and make money.

Thirdly, yes, we end up with some waste product regardless of what we do. Let's maybe try to think about ways to use those waste products cleanly, rather than just saying '**** it, might as well burn it". And we have time in spades to do that - mIllions of gallons sounds like a lot to you or me, but in terms of world storage capacity it's a proverbial drop in the ocean. You're talking about building one large facility per year, spread over the whole world.

Just for God' sake, given what we know about emissions and climate change, saying 'let's use it the way we previously have been because it's there anyway' is frankly mad. Because you know where that's going? Here..
