Internet Drama: Photobucket’s “ransom demand” leaves internet shops broken

I've just been in to have a look and I can't copy links to my images any more - it looks like I'd need to cough up at least $9.99/month to regain that privilege

So, they can [LIFTED] off.

Still seems to be working OK here.

It seems to be very hit and miss as to whether you are affected by the latest Photobucket changes or not.

There's a lot of discussion about it on another forum where I am a much more prolific poster and tend to use the image linking function a lot, but I still haven't been affected although plenty of others on there have.

AFAICS there seems to be a link between how full your library is, and how many images you link to to from external sites as to whether or not you have had external linking and embedding blocked.

I have already downloaded all my images from Photobucket and I will be using IMGBB for any new images I want to share on the forums where I post.

Hmm, interesting.

I tried copying some links in my PB library and none of them worked. On the other hand, that's where my user avatar for here is hosted and that still seems to be working.
I've still got all my original images anyway so it'll be no great loss either way. I could just upload stuff to OneDrive as I've got 1TB of storage on there (thanks Office365) but I've always found the linking a bit iffy from OD so I may have to do some research into alternatives. I don't particularly want my photo collection on BookFace either.

It will only be a matter of time for those still not affected by the change in Photobucket's image linking policy.

Linking from my account was disabled this morning, and I got an email from Photobucket confirming this. Consequently I have downloaded my Photobucket images and then deleted them all along with closing my account.

I suspect that Photobucket will be over before the end of the year.

For the moment I'm going to be using IMGBB, although it still needs a lot of work before it's as simple to use as Photobucket was when it was at its best. Obvious things like being able to change the order of photos in an album, and accessing the link codes for multiple images, are either apparently impossible or far too complicated compared with what I used to. Time will tell...

As above, I think it's linked to how much posting you do and how popular your images are.

Mine doesn't seem to be affected (yet):

~(this is rapidly turning NSFW)
I think this is the death-knell of PB.

Hardly surprising web hosting must cost. So it was good while it lasted.

These days it's probably more down to bandwidth, and all those linked images are going to use up a good deal of bandwidth, rather than hosting space.

Photobucket have finally caught up with me (as you can see from the image above) and there is no way I'm paying $400 to host the few photos and images I've got on there.

As expected, OneDrive is less than ideal for putting stuff on for subsequent sharing. I've just tried getting my user avatar up and running and either the link OD provides is too long for the forum to work with or is declared invalid.

So, any suggestions for decent (and preferably free) image hosting?

Flickr. You get a terabyte and unlimited uploads now with the free package. Plenty of options for linking to various places, too.

Yeah, I use Flickr too, it is part of Yahoo! and therefore considered a joke, because of Yahoo! lacsadasical attitude to security, but for stuff that you want to share anyway, I think it is fine.

Goodbye Photobucket - just deleted my account after they started badgering me to upgrade to the full paid for version (with a whole $10 off).
