Adblocking is a 'modern-day protection racket', says culture secretary | Media | The Guardian http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/m ... ittingdale That man is an absolute tw@, but he's right about the whitelisting. Problem is, it's the ad industry that needs to change, and maybe the hosts need to ask for it. You can have ALL the content, it's fcuking useless when it's bringing a mobile device to a halt, or tiring to read there's so much sh1te on the page. |

He is partially correct, adblocking is a threat to revenue models for websites (of all kinds). The problem is, people are using them because ad-slingers, like Google, are now one of the major routes for malware infection and the non-malware ads they sling are so intrusive that the sites that use them are unusable. The industry only has itself to blame and needs to look within for a solution, not bleet on about adblockers being evil. I don't use an ad-blocker per se, I just use NoScript and don't allow the ad-slingers to run JavaScript. If they want to show me an ad, they can serve me up a static image. But most don't even do that, but that is their problem, I am not blocking their adverts, just their scripts. If they don't have a static image to replace the animated nonsense, that isn't my problem. |

Meh, people wouldn't run ad-blockers if the online ads weren't so bloody intrusive. Pop-up windows, autoplay video ads, floating ads that scroll with the webpage - just a few examples of why people get pissed off. Don't blame ad-blockers, blame the online advertising arms race that stepped way over the line. |

Read this article. Tucked at the bottom is some minister whining about ad blowers and wanting to do something about them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35708623 |

I read on El Reg afterwards and he spent just as much time lambasting the ad slingers as he did ad-blocking, just ad-blocking is a cool subject for the press, whereas having a go at the people who generate their revenue isn't. |

Disable JavaScript? Sometimes these pop ups are script driven, unless they are detecting ad blocking at the server level and serving static ad-blocker content at you instead. Mind you, you could write to the editor and explain why you have an ad-blocker - ads that consume far too much bandwidth (video, audio), ads that obscure the content of the page completely, ones that consume too many resources to the lint where the browser ceases to function adequately . Also point out that Flash is a dying technology, and not to expect it to be installed in every desktop machine. |

Or just get your information from a site that isn't run by dicks. The problem any site that puts it's content behind a wall has is that there are a myriad of alternatives that don't. |

Yep. So far, every time I've hit a pay wall or ad-block whitelist demand, I've just gone elsewhere. Site I use on a regular basis tend to get white-listed, I may even click a few links in gratitude; unless they step over the line and start pushing intrusive ads at me. |

I switch ad blockers off, I'll start emailing editors screen shots of their pages if adverts start covering content. It seemed to work with MacUser once upon a time. |

Just disable JavaScript for the page and refresh. Usually, that’s all it needs. |
