Yes, but that's obviously because we didn't have in place the ability and right of the security services to monitor more stuff all the time.

They may not have the right but it hasn't stopped them!

AKA here's my chance after all these years.

He's got friends with both main parties.

It seems that they had more success in the old days, before they had all of this data...

Theresa May says 'lives at risk' without data surveillance
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30816331

Quote:
"It is allowing the police and the security services - under a tightly regulated and controlled regime - to find out the who, when, where and how of a communication - but not its content."

They've already been caught at the highest levels going much further than that! And under supposedly tight regulations. So tight they recorded private video chats of nearly two million Yahoo users alone. So super-tight that they do the NSA's constitutionally illegal work for them and vice versa... The only thing that's actually tight here is whatever's currently cutting off the oxygen to your brain.

[LIFTED]. RIGHT. OFF.

I heard a hilarious discussion on the radio during my drive home. Three people; one - a specialist in computer security, another - the CEO of a company who had said that his company simply could not operate in the UK under the regime proposed and thirdly -a lecturer in security studies from what I suspect is a former poly in London.

The latter was of the opinion that everything Cameron proposes was good and right because NATIONAL SECURITY. The tech expert explained why half of the proposals were technically impossible and the other half would make not jot of difference. The Academic replied that none of this mattered and the ideas were good because NATIONAL SECURITY. The CEO explained why his company would leave the UK as would many major tech companies and why half the city would have to leave if their encryption protocols could not be guaranteed. The academic replied that everything would be OK and that the ideas were good because NATIONAL SECURITY.

The academic actually used the following phrase several times - and this is a direct quote - "The internet is the wild west and we must bring the rule of law to it!' He also said 'The internet is like the world west and that may suit the Americans but we're Europeans and we don't like that'. He also claimed that fraud was rife on the internet, was entirely due to criminals having access to encryption and Cameron's measures would make a big difference.

It was like listening to the Daily Mail made flesh. Sadly, I suspect this guy isn't alone in either his ignorance or his sef-righteousness.\

EDIT : Actually, it wasn't live radio (although it was broadcast previously), it was the latest edition of the BBC's 'lets talk about tech' podcast. You can get a copy of it here

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/5li ... -1645a.mp3

The bit I'm talking about starts 3 minutes in. Genuinely, it's worth listening to if only to hear how utterly clueless academics tend to be once pulled out of their area of expertise.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015 ... terrorists

The article headline's a stretch, but

Quote:
Cameron said: “These companies are run by good and sensible people, we’re having good and productive conversations. You’re absolutely right we’re not China. We have a very clear set of legal procedures. I’m not trying to go through a back door here. The companies themselves have all sorts of interests, but one of those interests is they don’t want to be the platform that becomes safe for terrorists to talk to each other and plan appalling outrages on. We saw with respect to the terrorist outrage on the streets of Woolwich that companies don’t want to play a role in bad things that can happen.”

You mean when the ISC whitewash blamed Facebook and others for major security service fcuk-ups? Read the last sentence there again; as if any company should be held responsible for state security or the acts of the mentally deranged. It's also worth remembering he goes on trade missions to sell arms to medieval-thinking scumbags...

Oh, and bringing up terrorist outrages to make your political point?
