It doesn't seem that great an idea to begin with, and at those prices, who really cares? :?

Let me guess that you've never snapped the power socket on your mobile then. ;)

These pads have another application not yet realised - remote controls.

I keep meaning to build inductively chargeable AA batteries to achieve something similar. By energising a good sized area of my desk, I could use wireless devices without worrying about them going flat.

I really hate wires. As a communications engineer, this maybe considered a little ironic. The back of my car is full of the damned things

Nope, and it wouldn't matter, the phones have never been worth that much to begin with ;)

I want EVERYTHING wireless, just without the hoops you've to jump through with Wi-Fi at home :x

That must waste a lot of energy though?

I'd have thought so too...

It may not be quite as efficient as a direct cable, but in effect it's just a transformer. If a standard charger is 70% efficient, this might be 65%. Since we're only talking about devices which use less that 1 Watt I think that amount of loss is affordable. You're looking at about meh carbons per life.

^ Screw the carbons, think of the savings! ;)

Looks like a bit of a gimmick to me. You plug this pad in, find a device that works with it, put the device in one of the pre-defined charging areas (like a dock) and then charge your device. Given that the pad itself will need to be wired to the wall, what are you gaining?

Yeah, that's true Gav.

Bbbuuuuuuuuut, this is just the first product.

In years to come, the pads could be put into walls or floors rather than plugged in and left on a work-surface.

Or better still. The work surface is a wireless charging pad and any item placed on it (phone, mouse, keyboard, camera, etc...) gets charged as you work.

Wasn't it Intel who were working on 'jumping electricity'? :?

I'll look it up later at break time here if I remember...
