I think this is the first time 'Doze will try to work with multi-core chips in a meaningful way, and I haven't seen much software that makes use of multi-core, but then I don't buy/use much software ;)

Err.. how long ago did Intel start putting hyper-threading on their chips?

I remember my old P4 was a HT model.

Did Microsoft only just think it might be a good idea to optimise for it?? :?

I know Apple are improving things with Snow Pussy in that regard, but are they pretty much in the same boat as M$ there? :?

Well, the RC was pretty mediocre on my quad, scoring about the same as Vista on the CustomPC benchmarks and PCMark Vantage, so this sounds like more marketing than science going on here!

But when you think that servers have had multiple cores/procs for at least the last decade, and Apple had their own server platform and Microsoft had a server operating system, you'd have though that they would have been optimised to use the hardware, and if they did, it's taken far too long to migrate that technology to the consumer OS's

We had dual chip workstations back in he mid 90s. The apps then used to work faster on multiple chips / cores... That is why we bought them!

I'm guessing that's the actual answer - I'd also say features get held back for all sorts of reasons, like concentrating on chip speed for so long, the actual programming effort involved, and just holding back so that you had something new to introduce in terms of the OS... there's a reason people see little benefit to Vista and 7 in many cases :)

Back in the old days you used to have to buy Windows in different version depending on what chip you had. Hence the reason we still have the i386 folder.

Just means people with AMD chips will have even slower PC's
