West Coast Main Line deal ditched

Ministers have scrapped the decision to award the West Coast Main Line rail franchise to FirstGroup saying the bidding process was flawed.

The contract - awarded in August - was immediately challenged in the courts by Virgin Trains, which lost out.

Ministers say there were "significant technical flaws" in the way the risks for each bid were calculated and say the bidding process must be rerun.

They have also ordered two independent reviews into what happened.

Did you also hear the report on Radio 4 this morning saying that all expenses incurred by the bidders would be refunded ? This adds up to an estimated £50 - £60 million that the taxpayer is going to have to foot.

Given the level of pain the poor sods using the line for the next how ever many years would have had to put up with if First Group won it I'm sorry but having to make those savings is small fry.

As an example ( and there are plenty of others ) FGW have priced first class seats so far out of range that in 2 full carriages there is an average or 5 people on the run I use. They are too thick to realise that a drop of say 30% on first class travel cost would hugely increase the take up and therefore the profit.

I thought that having managed to escape First (Great Western) as my main train operator for the last 5 years I'd be forced to use whatever so-called service they offer on WCML for the foreseeable future. Bullet dodged, I think!

They probably do not care, especially when MP's could get free first class travel so the tax payer pays.

Among other things, not accounting for passenger numbers correctly nor accounting for inflation in any of the calculations....

Give me strength, what other number wangs have they done?
