Given some of the nonsense patents that have been granted a radical shake up is needed more than ever.

Easy solution - the patent should only be valid for the company that initially filed it.

Or, if they don't want it they can at least see if anyone wants to license the idea.

If not, they should simply stop funding it and allow anyone to use it. They shouldn't be transferable to another company that has no intention of actually making use of the idea.
