So, the cat is out of the bag and now he's sorry. I wonder if he's ever considered public office? |

Yeah, he judged that nobody would find out so it was worth doing. |

I'm pretty certain that almost all Premiership footballers earn most of their money in similar fashions. Wonder why they haven't been mentioned. Jimmy Carr seems a strange person to try and make an example of. |

He’s made a few cracks about tax avoidance in the past. He’s also a bit of a Marmite comedian, and he’s likely rubbed a few people in high places up the wrong way. Who broke this news? I believe it was The Times - who aren’t going to go after the cash cow that is Football because it will likely impact on another Murdoch business. Anyway, I think we can expect cabinet members’ tax affairs to be scrutinised by journalists over the next few weeks. I suspect a lot are scrambling to speak to their accountants this morning. |

It's all so hypocritical. The people that are moaning about it are either high earners doing the same thing or are friends with the high earners. The rich will always do their damndest to avoid paying tax while us normal folks pay large chunks of our hard earned money. Life's a b*tch and it's definiately too short to worry about how much tax Mr Carr is paying *shrugs* |

Until all journalists at all large news outlets publish their personal accounts in full, they can STFU |

It's a bit rich for the PM to criticise Jimmy Carr when major donors to the Tory party are doing the same thing, and now it appears his own father made his fortune that way.
True, but shouldn't we make a row about all these instances if we want them to act? Jimmy Carr's situation is nothing more than a catalyst for our outrage against the large-scale offenders. We're all feeling the austerity measures - many are struggling to get by, and plenty are losing their jobs - so, shouldn't the government be making headway against tax avoidance, considering the vast sums involved? Tens of billions sheltered from tax. |

I read recently that if all the UK's rich list paid full tax the country would be 75% out of debt. Enough said. some mash |

They are paying full tax. They are paying the tax that they are legally required to pay. The problem with tax avoidance is that it’s not illegal - that’s tax evasion. If you have an ISA - that’s a form of tax avoidance as you are not paying tax on the interest from those savings. Put that money in a current account, and you get taxed on it. So, first off, these loop holes need to be closed. But before that, we need to be in agreement with what is morally right. That is a harder question to deal with, and you know that those making the rules have a vested interest in defining the morality in such a way as it will not impinge on their tax arrangements. Calling income a “loan” is, in my mind, wrong. |
