Will that also mean they have to put up the price as soon as wholesale prices go up?
You may laugh and say "they do anyway", but often they try and wait as long as they can, purely as customers will go elsewhere if their prices go up before a local competitor.

I think people will take losing an odd penny per litre for a day or two on the prospect of saving 10's of pennies for months.

I doubt any such law change would be legal as it doesn't allow free trade.

They should look at Germany, here the prices fluctuate by as much as 10c an hour. If you turn up at the pumps at the wrong time of day, you can pay much more. In my area, Wednesday evenings seem to be the best time to fill up, between 19:00 and 22:00.

That goes the same in Denmark and Australia. Prices rise and fall according to the time of day/week, and you're completely shafted on a bank holiday weekend.

The only way I can see it working is if the reseller is paid commission and the refiners are actually the owners of the petrol until it is poured into the customer's tank.

The prices are controlled centrally by the fuel companies and they phone through the changes. They have scouts in the area which monitor the competition. The garage has to then adjust their prices instantly. That can actually mean that you pay more than what the pump says, by the time you have reached the cashier!

That's just wrong. The price per litre should be fixed the second you start pumping.

While there are I'm sure many admirable German ideas that we should copy - I think this one goes in the same pile as lederhosen and invading Belgium.
