What I'm a bit peed off about is learning of it here having thought the election was a while away. Even with parents actually living in France and French cousins. I think the lack of coverage by the uk press is pretty poor. This really does have an effect on our lives and should be more accessible. There's certainly been no end of coverage on the US's potential republican candidates and their progress and I'd argue that with the situation as it is in Europe right now, the French presidential election is of more consequence in the next couple of years. |

Re: coverage I agree with tombolt. I check the BBC almsot everyday and only became aware of the French election within the last few days. I'm sure if I went looking for information on a French election I would find it, but with the US election you just can't miss it. |

The BBC News channel became the French Presidential Election Channel most of yesterday (and the weekend before). Wall to wall Jon Sopel, sat in a marquee with the Eiffel Tower beyond.  In the past I've bemoaned the lack of European news on the BBC News channel, but they're more than making up for it at the moment. I guess, from previous comments here, Aunty is getting the balance about right. |

It's an important election. For the first time in a generation, it looked like Socialism was gaining traction in France, offering a different perspective for fighting the financial problems the Eurozone is suffering. The decision of the French people will have far reaching consequences for the Euro and beyond. It also means we won't see Carla Bruni being towed around by Sarkozy anymore. |
