I know one person who has bought a kindle this week and another who is planning to do so pretty soon (i.e. in the next month). That will mean four kindles in my immediate family (i.e. parents and siblings). It may be they're just reaching saturation point. But they're certainly still selling. Having said that, I think the Fire is slightly different. I'm not sure exactly who that's selling to. It's too expensive to compete with the e-readers and not really functional enough to compete with 'proper' tablets at or around the same price. To me, the Fire falls slightly between two stools. Given demand for 'proper tablets' i.e. the iPad and the android ICS tablets - remains quite strong it seems to me that most people possibly don't seem to see the Fire as a 'proper tablet', just as a really expensive e-reader. The only people I know with a Kindle/e-reader kajigger are all people I know online. In my immediate day-to-day circle of acquaintances, nobody has one. Edit: My nephew was given one for his birthday. Yesterday he staying in to wait for a delivery of books from Amazon. |

A lot of people I knew were interested in the Fire but Amazon took their sweet time and they all bought Kindles or a tablet of some description. Since one device won't currently cover both, I've got a Kindle and Acer A200 tablet myself. My ideal is the hybrid e-ink/colour 10 inch tablet with a non-super-glossy screen and a full USB port - if only my Acer did e-ink too ![]() |

I think Kindle Fire's are selling to anyone who fancies the idea of a 7" device for reading, light browsing and casual gaming, but who doesn't want to roll their sleeves up and delve into the whole Android thing. It does rely on Amazon's music, video, apps etc... which are U.S.-only right now; I'd buy a Fire in a heartbeat if it was offered here, but I'd also dump it in a heartbeat if Apple ever produced a ~7" iPad. I think everyone in my immediate family has a regular (e-ink) Kindle, however, they've all been massively underused since we've had iPads, and whenever we go back to Kindles they seem incredibly clunky in comparison. Kindle Touch may be an option, though I don't use it often enough to pick one up just now. I don't think Amazon have ever released Kindle sales stats, so it's anyone's guess what the 'analyst' in the original article was basing his figures on<shrug> |

I'm thinking of getting my dad a Kindle for Christmas. The problem is that as I can't walk into a shop and try them out, I don't know which one to get him. |

Tesco display 'em. Cheapest should be fine unless you think he'll be downloading whilst out... Kindle Touch to consider though... |

He hasn't even got wifi in his house, so he'll have to use a USB cable. Hmmm. If I gave him my G class router, I could get an N class one for my house. ![]() |
