How many cores have the current systems got?

May be wrong but I think it's a dual core CPU. The PS3 has.. well it's complicated, but it basically has seven 'processing units'. And my don't devs bitch about that. if the NeXtBOX turns up with 16 cores they may well blow a gasket.

Given that the PS3 isn't stretched and doesn't have all of its cores used in gaming, why don't they concentrate on efficiency? Max out the current number of cores first.

Only the hardcore I'd guess, or those with a techy bent, look at Nintendo's sales of slightly dodgy consoles :|

Eh? AMD were first to market with a true quad-core design. It's Intel that's into the whole fakery thing, with HT, quad-cores which are really two dual-cores mashed together etc.

I was referring to their Bulldozer design where some 'cores' share resources.
AMD say that isn't an issue. From what I understand the benchmarks show otherwise.

IIRC the current Xbox has three cores based on modified versions of the PS3 Cell PPE which are capable of running two hardware threads each for a total of six.

The Cell has a PPE and 8 SPEs. Out of the 8 SPEs one is disabled (IIRC this was to increase yeilds) and another reserved for the OS, leaving 6 for use by games.
