Waqaw Arshad, 24, of Sherd Close, Luton, admitted causing the death of Emily Brady, 17, by careless driving while over the drink drive limit.

Luton Crown Court heard the car crashed into a field in Buckinghamshire, while Emily was a front-seat passenger.

The court was told the couple had both been been drinking before the crash.

That is just pure sick! How could he have done that! Regardless as to whether it was his girlfriend or not, he should have pulled her out.

Like MSR said, this should have the death penalty, maybe burnt at the stake?

It seems that essentially the judge could not be sure if he would have given the same statements had he not been pissed. Therefore I guess that he is taking that into account when it comes to sentencing.

Even so it seems a mightily short sentence regardless of mental state. I wonder why it was so short? Could he have given longer?

He got a life sentence, you don't get longer than that. :?

Yes it does, they can be hauled back to prison at any time on Her Majesty's/the Home Secretary's whim.

Um as far as I'm concerned being allowed out of prison to carry on with your life after maybe 15 years is not a life sentence.

Except that as I say, you can be hauled back to prison at any point, night or day for blinking at someone the wrong way.

Prisoners are only supposed to be let out of prison when they are remorseful for their crimes and pose no further risk to the public. If prisoners have been properly rehabilitated should they not get a second go?

But then you're not giving people any reason to change their behaviour. If they're going to go to prison with no chance of ever getting out, they'll do anything to avoid prison (i.e. they'd have no qualms about killing anyone who gets in the way, since they're going to prison for life anyway). Whereas if there's the possibility of being granted parole, they might not want to commit more crimes for fear of increasing the length of time they spend in prison.

I understand where you are coming from with your argument. The flip side is

So somebody rapes your Mother/ Wife / Daughter. He is caught he gets 15 years and is out after 6 for saying he is sorry and he won't do it again.

A) Are you happy he has been punished? - IMHO No.

B) He rapes again - Did it stop him, NO.

At least if he was there for 15 years he would have been better punished and society would have been safe from him for longer.
I honestly don't know what the best solution is all I can do is state my opinion.
