While I'm generally into cost cutting and reducing tax payer subsidies of private industries, I have to say I think public transport is one area where the tax payer should help. Trains are vital for getting people to work without clogging up the roads.
IMO the government should ditch the HS2 plan and spend that cash on lengthening platforms at all stations. That way commuter trains can be much longer and ease overcrowding.

Absolutely. I’d add in the energy suppliers too. Anything vital should not be in the hands of the private sector.
