And that's just one reason why, at work, we're not allowed to be 'friends' on Facebook with our students.

This was a primary school, the kids wouldn't/shouldn't even have facebook accounts.

The people involved probably shouldn't be teachers anyway, obviously lacking in professionalism and intelligence on this one.

I seem to recall my friend who is a teacher had to create their own social network accounts because their students were creating fake ones of them.

I work at a college, and wouldn't be "friends" with any of my students, simply because a line has to exist between my work life and my home life, and my home life does not involve students.

In a similar vein I have a rule that I am not "friends" on Facebook with anyone from work.

It's not that I do stuff I wouldn't want to be seen around work etc... I just want to keep my personal life to myself (and my friends).

The article doesn't state that they were friends with students...Could it be that Facebook just made these postings public? Perhaps doing one of it's many "reset everything and get you to put it back together with less control than last time"?

It does make you wonder what else is said behind closed doors though, most people will be vaguely aware that they shouldn't do things like that on Facebook, but what on earth is said in the staff room about students!? Probably things far, far worse. Even more worse on a drunken night out, I'd have thought...

All the FaceBook thing shows is that teachers can be as cynical about their work as anyone else is - and there are times when they have to vent. FaceBook is, in my opinion, not the place to do that though.

I’m not a fan of having work colleagues as friends on FaceBook either. I try to keep it to a minimum (only because the people from work I do have as friends on FB I would not cross the road to avoid when not on duty), but I can imagine that there are times when there is pressure applied to do so.
