A company will begin offering a directory service from next week that allows people to find the mobile phone numbers of people they don't know.

Run by 118800, it will cost £1 and use databases of numbers it said are freely available for purchase and in the public domain.

Anyone searching for a number can type the name and location of the person into the 118800 website.

It claims to have some 15m numbers in its database.

If they don't provide an opt out they'll be hearing from my lawyer.

perhaps this should be an opt in, could you imagine how many crank calls and texts we'll be subjected to? I can imagine the directory's being shipped off to those dodgy phone-jacker countries.

I like to control who I give my number out to. I like my number and intend to keep it (as I have done for the last eight years). I don't want some moron trying to get ahold of me (work in a hospital).

The mobile phones have been in the normal directory here, since they were introduced. When you take out a contract, you elect whether the number should be included in the directory or not.

Umm... has anyone tried using it yet?

It doesn't seem to give out the mobile phone numbers like it has been suggested.

I tried to search for me and it said it would send the person I am looking for a text with my telephone number to let them know I would like to get in touch.

i.e. it is up to the person you are searching for to call you back or text you.

So, I have to pay to receive a call from someone I probably don’t know?

No, that would be stupid.

Say you want to find my number.

You go to the website and put my name and home town in. If it can find me you then enter YOUR mobile number and name. It will then charge YOU £1 and send ME a text with your details saying you want to get in touch with me.

It is then up to me to text or call you if I want to speak to you.

If it charged the person you are looking for then you could search thousands of times and give someone a huge bill.
