Quote:
Councils are adding charges of up to 3% to bills for council services in some areas, if customers choose to pay by credit card, Which? has discovered.

Its Freedom of Information requests found at least 55 councils were making credit card charges, with 12 adding 2% or more to the cost of services.

Two councils were charging for both credit and debit card transactions.

Seven councils have started imposing card charges in the last year and several have plans to bring them in.

Seems reasonable to me TBH. Since credit companies charge (typically) 3% of the transaction and debit cards (typically) cost 25 pence to process I don't see why the council shouldn't recover these costs - it's not like they're charging over the odds.

Of course if you don't like it and want to piss off your local authority, you can pay all your bills in £1 coins (they can refuse smaller denominations).

Not if you have a business account. They then charge for cash in and out!

As for credit card charges, when the CC companies are making 20% per year if you don't pay off in full a business owner is bound to be annoyed at paying to the card company. this is the credit crunch. Lots of companies have been doing this for years.

they are making a lot more than that. They get the funding from the Bank of England at 0% so will make a profit no matter what. The only risk they have is that you do not pay back.
