http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11412031

Quote:
Ed Miliband has won the Labour leadership after narrowly beating brother David in a dramatic run-off vote ahead of the party's conference.

Ed won by just over 1% from former foreign secretary David after second, third and fourth preference votes came into play.

He said a "new generation" had taken charge of Labour and it had to change.

Ed Balls was third, Andy Burnham fourth and Diane Abbott last in the ballot of MPs, members and trade unionists.

Mr Miliband, 40, replaces acting leader Harriet Harman in the contest triggered by the resignation of Gordon Brown.

He is unlikely to keep the party to right of New Labour, hopefully it will move back towards the centre though still pushing the Liberals further to the right.

I was watching Sky News in the gym (no choice, the channels on the TVs are locked) when the news came through and their ticker initially said 'Milliband wins labour leadership'. Idiots.

 :D

Have to say, I'd have thought they'd have gone for David, but I'm happy that there will be less queasiness about in that respect - if that guy was any slimier he'd be sea-based :P

Well they would have preferred David because he was further to the right than his brother. Yes there is something about David I do not like. I am happy that Ed is now the leader. If the Labour party drifted ever further to the right then many middle class voters might think differently.

So, he’s the Left Winger is he? Hard to tell - he was always the quieter of the Milliband boys. All I’ve heard about is how David is trying to get the party to follow Ed whilst at the same time trying not to appear to be a sore loser with a career path in ruins.

Yes there is a lot of talk of him leaving and getting an EU job or something or other. I do not think that he needs to do that. Plus why cant he have some other important role in the shadow government.

One thing is, Mandy should melt away into the shadows.

Sith Lords always hide in the shadows, so no change there. ;)

Ed Miliband tells Labour: We're the optimists now (and the Iraq war was wrong)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11417906

I don't remember any of the current senior Labour members saying the Iraq war was wrong at the time, or even when it became clear the 45 minutes claim (amongst others) was bollox...

I was in support at first based on the evidence that was presented to us. Though once the weapons were not found then it was looking decidedly dodgy us being there. The biggest criminals were the ones that prepared the report and Alistair Darling.

The only one I remember was a certain Charles Kennedy. I also remember a rather crude attack/riposte from Blair accusing the unfortunate Mr. Kennedy of not supporting the troops in their hour of need. It was a low blow, and if Charles hadn't been quite so sozzled, I'm sure he could have defended, but as it was, he sat back down.

I think that we all support the troops. They were not the ones that decided to go to war. It was Blair that failed to support the troops.

As I said, if only Kennedy had his wits about him....
