Updates: PS3 will no longer support lossless audio during 3D Blu-ray playback, following Firmware update v3.50.

CVG reader LordVonPS3 has clarified the move:

'PS3 will now playback 3D Blu-rays - as well as 2D discs - but when playing back 3D Blu-rays, it'll be at the expense of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD being converted to (lossy) Dolby Digital and DTS respectively.

Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD are lossless compressed audio formats. For 2D Blu-rays, the PS3 decompresses these audio streams (in real-time) and outputs the sound as PCM (also lossless). Obviously at the moment it's either struggling to do that plus 3D at the same time, or perhaps the developer simply hasn't worked out how to do it yet. A future firmware update may sort this out, but for a first stab at showing 3D Blu-ray movies, it's not a bad update.'

PSU reports that when Dolby TrueHD is selected as the audio format, audio will be output in Dolby Digital during playback of Blu-ray 3D content.

As for DTS-HD, audio will be output in regular DTS.

Sony's Firmware 3.50 has disabled unlicensed third-party USB devices.

Sony has revealed via a consumer alert in the US that some counterfeit PS3 pads are exploding.

Yes. Exploding.

Strikes me as more a case of, 'We'd like to cause a lot of confusion on the issue so you play it safe and buy our wildly overpriced controllers' :?

It sounds like they are churning these updates out in the hope that they can hide something nasty in amongst them so that the average user does not notice until it is too late.

The updates should be FULLY optional - it's an absolute nonsense that I have to download an update before I can go online, and especially when it's full of crap like FB integration and video editing. Things like that should come off the Store like Vid Zone etc.

Or even worse, stuff that takes away functionality and/or hasn't been tested properly :x

PS3 Firmware update 3.50 paralysing old Mad Catz pads
